Christmas Eve has arrived in Yule Vale, and while homes throughout Emberlore are settling in for the night, the Claus household is still bustling with the final preparations for the most important evening of the year. Santa has made his list and is checking it twice, Mrs. Claus is putting the finishing touches on her Christmas baking and decorations, and somewhere between all that necessary work, the two of them are finding plenty of time to enjoy the traditions they have shared through countless Christmases together.

Christmas Eve with the Clauses follows Santa and Mrs. Claus through those final cozy hours before Santa heads out into the winter night. Five fragrances carry the story from his chocolate-fueled preparations through cinnamon-sugar cookies and a candy-covered gingerbread cottage before the evening quiets over warm vanilla eggnog and ends with one last Christmas tradition beneath the mistletoe.

Five Scents. One Story.

Chapter One — Snowmint Chocolate

Santa has made his list, and now he is checking it twice, carefully working through names, destinations, and all the little details that must be right before he leaves. Beside him sits a mug of rich chocolate touched with cool peppermint, something Mrs. Claus knows will keep him quite content while he works, although whether it helps him concentrate or simply gives him an excuse to linger over the list is another question entirely.

The creamy chocolate and refreshing peppermint of Snowmint Chocolate mingle through the warm room as Santa continues down the page. Mrs. Claus passes through from time to time, busy with preparations of her own, and occasionally catches him staring thoughtfully at a name as though he hasn't already spent the better part of the year preparing for this night. She knows better than to rush him, though, because Christmas Eve has its traditions, and Santa isn't going anywhere until that list has been properly checked for the second and final time.

Chapter Two — Sugarspell Cookie

By the time Santa reaches the end of his list, a plate of Sugarspell Cookies has appeared beside him, still carrying the warm cinnamon-sugar and buttery vanilla fragrance of Mrs. Claus's kitchen. He glances toward the doorway and smiles because she has already disappeared back to whatever she is working on, leaving behind exactly the sort of temptation she knows perfectly well he cannot resist.

Santa takes one while organizing his papers, then reaches for another while convincing himself that two cookies hardly count as interfering with Christmas preparations. By the time Mrs. Claus returns, the generous plate she left behind looks considerably less generous, and she pauses just long enough to glance from the remaining cookies to her husband. Santa gives her his most innocent expression, Mrs. Claus gives him the look of a woman who has been married to that expression for a very long time, and neither of them bothers pretending she doesn't know exactly where the missing cookies went.

Chapter Three — Gingerbread Cottage

With Santa's lists finally finished, Mrs. Claus turns her attention to the Gingerbread Cottage waiting on the kitchen table. Sweet orange and ginger mingle with cinnamon and clove as she works, adding frosting and colorful candies until the little cottage begins to look as though it belongs somewhere among the snow-covered houses of Yule Vale itself.

Santa eventually wanders into the kitchen to admire her progress, although Mrs. Claus becomes considerably more suspicious when his admiration brings him within easy reach of the candy decorations. He assures her that he is merely appreciating her craftsmanship, but she has known him far too long to mistake that particular expression for anything other than a man wondering whether one missing piece of candy would actually be noticed. She nudges his hand away before he can test the theory, and Santa retreats with a grin while Mrs. Claus finishes her cottage with every piece of candy exactly where she intended it to be.

Chapter Four — Yuletide Vanilla Eggnog

As evening deepens over Yule Vale, the last preparations are finally finished and the house begins to grow quieter. Santa's list has been checked twice, the Gingerbread Cottage stands completed, and what remains of the Sugarspell Cookies has wisely been moved beyond his immediate reach. Before coats, goodbyes, and the long Christmas journey begin, Santa and Mrs. Claus settle together with warm cups of Yuletide Vanilla Eggnog.

As she crosses the room, she passes beneath the sprig of mistletoe hanging above the doorway, surrounded by the crisp green fragrance of pine and fir softened with gentle winter spice.

Santa notices immediately, and Mrs. Claus catches the familiar spark in his eye before he has the chance to say a word. She has shared enough Christmases with this man to know exactly what is coming, particularly when he suddenly seems in considerably less of a hurry to get out the door.
