There is a town that grows livelier after respectable people have gone to bed.

Lanterns appear in crooked windows. Shop doors that were locked at sunset suddenly stand open. Music drifts from somewhere you cannot quite locate, and at the edge of the square a narrow passage disappears between two leaning buildings.

The weathered sign above it reads Witches Alley.

You probably shouldn't go down there.

Naturally, you do.

I — Witches Alley

The alley twists between ancient buildings, its uneven stones glowing beneath hanging lanterns. Doorways lead to shops selling things without sensible names, while bundles of herbs and strange wares hang overhead. The air is deep and resinous, warm with the accumulated scents of old timber, incense, and whatever might be simmering behind the shuttered windows.

Near the end of the lane, however, something unexpectedly sweet catches your attention.

II — Pumpkin Candy

A tiny confectioner's shop is still open.

Its windows are crowded with glass jars, paper parcels, and trays of Pumpkin Candy, golden with caramel and made in shapes you don't recognize. You buy a handful for the road because whatever good judgment brought you this far has clearly abandoned you already.

The sweetness follows you beyond the last lantern.

Ahead, the road disappears beneath the trees.

III — Dying Trees

The forest has nearly surrendered its leaves.

They crackle beneath your feet as bare branches knit together overhead, and the warmth of town gradually disappears behind you. Dry wood, fallen leaves, and the faintest trace of smoke move through the cold air.

For a while there is nothing but the path.

Then a light appears between the trees.

A crooked sign hangs beside an old door.

Apparently, the night isn't finished with you yet.

IV — Black Absinthe

Inside, bottles line the walls from floor to ceiling, filled with colors that probably don't occur naturally.

Someone places a glass of Black Absinthe before you.

Dark fruit gives way to something green and herbal, unusual enough to make you wonder precisely what you've ordered. Around you, conversations continue in lowered voices while travelers come and go through the door.

You decide one glass is plenty.

Fortunately, there is one final place still awake before the road home.

V — Halloween Brew

Near the edge of town, a little tavern kitchen still glows against the darkness.

Here the strange bottles are replaced by heavy mugs and the warm fragrance of Halloween Brew, a toasted pumpkin spice blend that seems perfectly suited to the hour. Roasted pumpkin and warming spices fill the room while you settle in long enough to decide whether everything that happened tonight actually happened at all.

Outside, the eastern sky has begun to lighten.
